Virgil H. Skaggs

Virgil Hunter Skaggs departed this life on February 14, 2019, at Katy Manor in Pilot Grove, MO.  He was born February 4, 1922 in Sedalia, the son of Mitchell Hampton and Ellen (Hunter) Skaggs.  Virgil was 97 at the time of his death.

Virgil graduated from Smith-Cotton High School and on June 27, 1943 in Sedalia he married Neva Irene (Miers) Skaggs.  She preceded Virgil in death August 13, 2015.  They were married for 72 years.

Virgil worked as a machinist for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.  He worked in Sedalia, St. Louis, and Kansas City, MO.  He retired in 1982 from the Texas Pacific Railroad in Ft. Worth, TX as a general foreman.  They stayed in Texas and returned to Sedalia in 1998 to be close to family.

Virgil loved his yard and his garden.  He liked country music and big band music.

Virgil was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Sedalia.  He is a member of Granite Lodge 272, Sedalia, MO, American Legion, Cole Camp, MO and Scottish Rite Free Mason Valley of Ft. Worth.

Virgil is survived by his daughter, Rita Sue (Wayne) Kanenbley, of Syracuse, MO; a son, Richard (Patricia) Skaggs, of Swansea, IL; four grandchildren, Cindy (Craig) Chancey of Olathe, KS, Lynn (Casey) Jensen, of Olathe, KS, Mark Kanenbley, of Pleasant Hill, MO and Jennifer (Charles) O’Hearn of Florissant, MO.  Also surviving are five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Patterson and one brother, James Skaggs.

Funeral services will be Monday, February 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Heckart Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Satterwhite officiating.

Casket bearers are grandsons and nephews.

Honorary bearers are Frank and Patsy Gooch, Roy and Elaine Bryson, Merlin and Bobbie Balke.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Army and VFW Post 2591.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
