Julius Ray Marcum, Sr.

Julius Ray Marcum, Sr, 75, of Hughesville, died Sunday, June 7, 2020 at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

He was born October 12, 1944, in Cooper County, a son of the late Raymond and Agnes Pearl (Reith) Marcum. On February 19, 1966, he married Roberta Mae Mabry, who preceded him in death on June 22, 2003.

Ray lived in Blackwater and his family moved to Hughesville when he was five years old. He was a 1962 graduate of Northwest High School and a longtime member of Hughesville Baptist Church. He served his country honorably in the US Navy.  He worked in maintenance at Classic, Swifts, Pettis County Road Department and Hayes Wheels, where he retired in 2007.

He was an avid football fan and enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs, University of Missouri and Mo Valley. He also enjoyed traveling, especially Upstate New York, classic cars, hunting and spending time outside. His favorite restaurant was the Brick Front Grill and he was one of their best and most loyal customers.

Survivors include two children Ray Marcum, Jr. (Deena), and Shelly Pettis (Bruce Raney), all of Hughesville; a brother George Marcum (Debbie), of Sedalia; a sister Jewell Brown (Charles), of Beaman; four grandchildren Casey Vogelsmeier, Sam Pettis, Chris Marcum and Dillon Pettis; one great-grandson Knox Vogelsmeier; six step-children Martie Kearney, Donnie Goodman, Mark Goodman, Randy Goodman, Debbie McCall and Kim Snapp; and 12 step-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Marcum.

Funeral service will be noon Thursday, June 11, 2020 at Heckart Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers will be Zac Hopkins, David Lopez, Sam Pettis, Dillon Pettis, Chris Marcum, Blake Vogelsmeier and Knox Vogelsmeier. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be 10 am until service time.

The family suggests memorial contributions to American Diabetes Association or Wounded Warrior Project in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
