Marian Lynette (Schaefer) Tempel, 91, of Sedalia, MO, died Sunday, December 16, 2018.

She was born on October 21, 1927, at Higginsville, MO, daughter of Charles F. and Hulda C. (Riekhof) Schaefer, Sr.

Marian attended the Republican Elementary School in rural Lafayette County and graduated from Higginsville High School in 1945. While in high school she studied organ with Edna Scotten Billings, organ professor at CMSU in Warrensburg, MO. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1949, majoring in organ, studying under Dean Luther T. Spayde with a minor in piano under Dr. N. Louise Wright and Professor Opal Hayes from Central Methodist College, Fayette, MO. She was a lifetime member of Phi Beta Music Fraternity and received the Phi Mu Alpha Music Award for outstanding accomplishment in organ.

On August 26, 1949, Marian was united in marriage to Louis H. “Lou” Tempel, Jr. of Mayview, MO. From September ’49 until ’51 she was secretary to the Dean of Music at Stephens College, Columbia, MO, while Lou was working toward his Master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering. After moving to Independence, MO, she taught fourth grade at Chapel School in Raytown, MO. Also, while living there she was organist at the UCC church in Independence, MO.

In 1957 the Tempel family moved to Sedalia where Marian was both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader for several years. Also, she was organist at the Broadway Presbyterian Church from 1958 until 2008, retiring after 50 years. In 1990 she presented an organ recital at the church.

Marian was a 31-year Auxiliary volunteer at Bothwell Regional Health Center and served as Manager of the Auxiliary Gift Shop. In 2004 she received the first annual Bothwell Auxilian Award for Meritorious Service to the Auxiliary, hereafter named the Marian Tempel Award. She was also a volunteer at the Children’s Therapy Center. She was a member and past president of Chapters IP and LQ, P.E.O. and a former member of the American Guild of Organists, the Helen G. Steele Music Club and the Sedalia Garden and Study Club.

Marian is survived by her husband Lou, of the home; one son, Curtis and wife, Julie, of Cumming, GA; one daughter, Marla Abrams, of Sedalia; four grandchildren, Anne and Eric Tempel, and Bradley and Morgan Abrams; two great-grandchildren, Makai and Gabriela. One son, Dr. Lance H. Tempel, DDS, preceded her in death in 2001. Her parents and brother, Charles F. Schaefer, Jr. and wife, Erna, also predeceased her.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2018, at Broadway Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rob Hughes officiating.

Entombment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Broadway Presbyterian Church, the Children’s Therapy Center, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
