Beaman

Joyce Jean Smith, 83, of Beaman, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2025, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born December 2, 1942, in Sedalia, the daughter of the late Harold and Pearl (Fredrickson) Garrett. On March 17, 1960, in Sedalia, she was united in marriage to Larry Smith, who survives of the home.

Joyce was a 1960 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School. She and her husband owned and operated Smith’s Grocery in Beaman for many years, where she was known for her sandwich-making.

She was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, along with reading and traveling. Her favorite trip was to China, though she also treasured time spent in Hawaii and visiting wherever her children happened to be living. Joyce was known for her good sense of humor.

She faced her recent health challenges with strength and determination. The family appreciates all the kindness of the many doctors, nurses, and staff at the Canon Cancer Center and Bothwell Regional Health Center.

In addition to her husband of 65 years, Larry, survivors include two children, Lisa Chapman of Beaman and Steve Smith (Paula) of Smithton; grandchildren, Michele Cape of Orange, Texas, Ryan Chapman of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Ryley Chapman of Beaman, and Kimberly Smith and Kristen Smith, both of Smithton; and three great-grandchildren, Malory, Stephen, and Ivana.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her aunt, Shirley Coffman.

A private graveside service will be held at Olive Branch Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Heckart Funeral Home.
