John Robert "Bob" Hughes

John Robert “Bob” Hughes, 77, of Sedalia, passed away Monday, June 3, 2024 at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia.

He was born December 14, 1946, in Jasper, a son of the late John Edgar and Martha Jane (Burdick) Hughes. On September 21, 2007, in Sedalia, he married Carla Hayes, who survives of the home.

Bob served his country honorably in the Army Air Corp during Vietnam.   

He was a lifetime member of VFW. He loved old classic country music and horses. He enjoyed rodeoing bareback and saddle bronc riding and tinkering outdoors. He loved his family and helped his kids in rodeo and baseball. 

In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by two sons, James Alan Hughes (Sarah), of Asbury and James Hamilton (Erin), of LaMonte; three sisters, Romona Buerge (companion Rusty), of Carthage, Sissy Grant (Jerry), of Scammon, KS and Linda Riley (Gordon), of Carthage; seven grandchildren Hunter Hughes (companion Ashely), Holden Hughes (companion Makayla), Mikeal Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Vanessa Hughes, Hadley Gottschalk and Preston Hamilton; two great grandchildren, Fontona Webb and Tymber Hughes; his former wife of 39 years, Barbara Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a son, John Richard Hughes; both maternal and paternal grandparents; a brother, Richard Hughes and his wife, Janet Hughes; two nephews, Rick Grant and Jason Riley.

Visitation will be 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Heckart Funeral Home.

Graveside service will be 1:30 pm Saturday, June 15, 2024 Blackjack Cemetery, near Nashville, MO with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of donor’s choice in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
