Janice Marie Summers, 81, of Sedalia, formerly of Independence, passed away Friday, May 5, 2023, at EW Thompson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 4, 1942, in Kansas City, daughter of William Earl and Helen Vivian (Morris) Hayden.

Jan worked at Western Construction Group in Kansas City for over forty years, where she retired as a Division Controller.

She was a member and deacon at Broadway Presbyterian Church, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, served on the Sedalia Parks Board, and volunteered as a mentor at Parkview Elementary School.

She volunteered with FIRST Robotics Competition and rooted for Team SCREAM, in which her grandsons were involved. Whether it was this or sports, she was their forever cheerleader.

Her hobbies included genealogy, reading, antique auctions, cooking and baking. She was famous for her cookies, at least to her grandsons. In her younger years, she enjoyed spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks.

She loved coordinating Christmas dinners and getting everyone together. She was devoted to her parents, her daughter, her grandsons, and her whole family.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan L. Summers Daly (Patrick), of Cedar Rapids, IA; three grandsons, Ethan, Cole and Beck; two brothers, Robert D. Hayden (Barbara Jo), of Sedalia, and William M. Hayden (Barbara Ann), of Blue Springs; a brother-in-law, Timothy Barker, of Independence; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Constance R. Barker.

Memorial services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Broadway Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Rob Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2023, at Green Lawn (Park Lawn) Cemetery, Kansas City.
