Jack M. Hawkins

Jack Marvin Hawkins, 88, of Sedalia, died Friday, August 2, 2019, at EW Thompson Health and Rehab.

Jack was born in Linn Creek, Missouri on August 26, 1930, son of L.H. Luckey and Lola Luckey (McGown).  He grew up in Sedalia, MO and graduated from Smith Cotton High School in 1949.  On September 27, 1950 he married his sweetheart Ruth Ann Keuper, also known as Soozi.  Shortly thereafter he served in the army during the Korean War.  After a year and a half overseas, he returned home to Soozi and together they ran The Wheel Inn Drive Inn, home of the famous Guberburger.  Jack and Soozi owned and operated the Wheel Inn together for 36 years. They raised two sons, Keith Hawkins and Jack Lyman Hawkins. Jack Sr. worked at the Wheel Inn six days a week to provide for his family, taking little time for himself and never complaining, ever.  He enjoyed a little fishing and hunting when he could squeeze them in.  Many people in town knew Jack as their first boss while working at the Wheel Inn, or as regular customers.  It seemed to Jack’s children that he knew everyone in town by name.  He was respectful to all and served everyone from the Governor of Missouri to the local produce delivery man with the same courtesy and smile (though perhaps with the exception of the county health inspector, who he treated with extra attention and thoughtfulness).

Jack is survived by his wife Ruth Ann Hawkins, son Keith Hawkins, son Jack Hawkins (Lyn Hawkins), and two grandchildren, David Hawkins and Anna Hayes.  Jack was a devoted and loving husband to Soozi for 68 years.  He loved his two sons and was present, supportive, and caring throughout their lives.  He always took his grandson fishing and flew with Soozi all the way to Australia to see his newborn granddaughter.  Born a child of humble circumstances, Jack worked hard and became a successful businessman and enjoyed a good life rich in friends, family and community. He was a unique and authentic person who will be missed, loved, and dearly remembered.  Ruth Ann and the Hawkins family wish to express gratitude to the entire community of Sedalia for so many years of support and care, and for all the cards, visits and remembrances in Jack’s honor.

Private services will be held.

Arrangements are in the care of Heckart Funeral Home.
