Evelyn R. Dumsday

Evelyn Rose Dumsday, 83, of Sedalia, passed away Monday, October 17, 2022, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born September 3, 1939, in Sedalia, a daughter of the late George and Rethel Marie (Thomas) McNew. She met John William Dumsday, Jr. at Emmett Avenue Baptist Church and on August 7, 1966, they were married at the church. Mr. Dumsday preceded her in death on June 4, 2004.

Evelyn was a lifelong Christian and in her late teens, she publicly professed her faith and was baptized in a creek. She was an active member of Emmett Avenue Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, and participated in the choir and card ministry. While a member at Memorial Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and helped with VBS.

She held several jobs throughout her life including at a laundry, Lamy’s, Swifts, and caregiver at Margene’s (which later became Stoney Ridge) from where she retired.

Evelyn loved to stay busy. She was a compassionate person who enjoyed animals, being outdoors, crafts, sewing, needlework, gospel music, flowers, helping others, spending time with family and friends, and sitting outside with a cup of coffee.

Survivors include two children, John William Dumsday, III (Bonnie), of Sedalia, and Sara Baker, of Sedalia; and three grandchildren, Gabby Marie Hamby, Amanda Elizabeth Dumsday and John William Dumsday IV; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her adoptive father, Dave Pirtle; a grandson, Ricky Ray Baker, II; siblings, Otis McNew (Helen), Mary Hayes (Elwood), Velma Pilkington (Veldon), Jim Pirtle (Jean) and Louella Hauser (George).

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2022, at Emmett Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. Steve Cardwell, Rev. Robert Dumsday and Rev. John Dumsday III officiating.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Hamby, Jr., Kevin Hayes, Robert Brown, Gary West, Robert Dumsday II and Darrell McNew. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Pilkington, Dean Cunningham, Duane McNew, Richard Dumsday, John Dumsday IV, Gabby Hamby, Amanda Dumsday, Bobby Hauser and Donnie Hayworth.

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Heckart Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the family, Emmett Avenue Baptist Church, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan’s Purse), in care of the funeral home.
