Christine D. Atwood, 78, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia.
She was born June 3, 1948, in Lexington, Kentucky, the daughter of James Albert Preston and Agnes (Puckett) Preston Dean.
On January 27, 1968, in Nicholasville, Kentucky, she was united in marriage to James Russell Atwood. They shared 58 years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters.
Christine attended Jessamine County High School. As Russ pursued his career in the military, Christine embraced the life of a military wife, making a home for her family in 27 residences across 13 states. Through every move, she brought a sense of home and family wherever they went.
Christine was a loving soul whose kindness touched everyone around her. She was more than a mother to her daughters; she was “Mom” to many of their friends, who found comfort and love in her welcoming heart. Russ lovingly called her by a variety of pet names, her daughters called her Mom, and to her granddaughters she was Nanny.
Family was at the center of Christine’s life, and she was happiest when caring for others. She loved hosting family holidays, especially Christmas, which she enjoyed celebrating all year long. Her greatest joy was feeding those she loved, and no one ever left her home hungry. She was a devoted grandmother and cherished every moment spent with her family.
In her quieter moments, Christine enjoyed doing word searches, watching television, traveling, and feeding the birds and squirrels. Her Southern Baptist faith was an important part of her life.
Christine will be remembered for her beautiful, gentle spirit, her generous heart, and the love she gave so freely. She had a way of making people feel welcome and cared for, and her presence brought comfort and happiness to those around her. She was truly a precious soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Russ; two daughters, Deanna Atwood and Darla Beckman (Aaron); three granddaughters, Sierra Beckman, Sabrina Beckman, and Summer Atwood; and a great-granddaughter, Vivian Benko.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Mike Dean.
The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.
As Christine suffered from liver disease, memorial contributions to the American Liver Foundation would be a fitting tribute to her memory.
Arrangements are in the care of Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia, Missouri.
