Mike Smethers

Aug 9, 1945 — Sep 6, 2026

Sedalia

Charles Michael “Mike” Smethers, 81, of Sedalia, passed away peacefully Sunday night, September 6, 2026, at his home.

He was born August 9, 1945, in Sedalia, the only son of Charles W. and Esther (Mitchell) Smethers. He had four sisters, Lynda, Andra, Marilyn, and Nancy.

On June 10, 1967, in Sedalia, he was united in marriage to Sherry Murray. They were blessed with two daughters, Amy and Ashley.

Mike was a 1963 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Mike built a career as a builder and land developer through Mike Smethers Construction. He developed Hunter’s Ridge, Katy Trails, and Cambridge Village subdivisions in Sedalia, along with 300+ homes and other structures. One of his notable projects was the building that now houses Katy Trail Community Health.

Mike was a devoted Christian and longtime member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 49 years and was recently awarded deacon emeritus status. He found a way to use his skills in building to serve others. He participated in mission trips throughout the country and overseas, helping with construction and restoration projects. Throughout the community, he also helped build countless wheelchair ramps and did other projects for those in need.

Mike loved golfing, traveling, and spending time outdoors, especially at the lake. Throughout the years, he had several favorite toys including a motorcycle, a sailboat, and a wave runner. His favorite pastime, however, was watching his grandchildren play sports. He was looking forward to a trip back to Florida in February to watch his granddaughter, Abby, and the Tigers play softball. He also enjoyed his motorcycle.

Family was important to Mike. He loved his wife, daughters, and grandchildren by being a reliable, steady presence. Mike was a man of few words, but those words often held deep wisdom. He was a friend to many and enjoyed gathering with his morning coffee groups.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Sherry, of the home; two daughters, Amy Hay and husband, John, and Ashley Turner and husband, Jeremiah, all of Columbia; five grandchildren, Zack Hay, Abby Hay, Nicholas Turner, Lucy Turner, and Ellie Turner; three sisters, Lynda Alcorn, Andra Coulson, and Marilyn Rimmer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Nancy McCroskey.
