Carol Ruth Slagel, 80, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Sedalia, MO, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2020, in Lakeland.

Born August 27, 1940, in Sedalia, she was one of four children of William Phillip and Ruth Roberta (Stevens) McCune.

On May 18, 1978, she married Duane Slagel, who preceded her in death on September 3, 2018.

Carol was a graduate of Green Ridge High School and attained her Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies and her Master’s degree in Science and Education from Central Missouri State University. She began her career as a history teacher and later became the librarian at Smith-Cotton High School.

Church and family always came first for Carol. She and Duane loved to travel and took many trips through State Fair Community College. They also enjoyed camping trips with the United Methodist Camping group. She enjoyed fine arts. She played the piano for several churches, gave piano lessons and was a member of the Helen G. Steele Music Club.

Surviving are a son, Peter C. Whittier (Penny), of Port Saint Lucie, FL, and Erin Welch (Jack), of Lakeland, FL; three stepsons: Daniel Slagel (Ramona), of Modesto, CA, Douglas Slagel (Jamie), of Dallas, TX, and David Slagel, of Dallas, TX; ten grandchildren: Jennifer, Bill, Tina, Becca, Joe, Kenny, Zach, Jake, Alexis and Abigail; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don McCune, of Davenport, FL.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale McCune and David McCune.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at La Monte Cemetery, with Rev. Jim Downing officiating.
