Carl E. Mathews

Carl E. Mathews peacefully left this world on Oct 3, 2019, at his home.  He was born by lantern light in Shelby County Illinois on Sept. 15, 1938 to Isabel (Rankin) Mathews and Luther Mathews.

Serving in the Army as a Code Breaker, intercepting messages from the Russians at Kenai, Alaska-7th Field Station-1957 through 1960.  He had a great love of the outdoors; an avid/extraordinary hunter and fisherman.  Carl never cared much about anything except the things that really mattered.  An Operating Engineer with Local 916, he saved many a tree in the way of progress.  Mr. Mathews had a charm, a way with words- he often would resort to bafflement when brilliance just wouldn’t get the job done.  Affectionately known as “Snook”, many a pie fell into the wrong hands- snatched right off the window sills due to Dad’s out and out love for pie.

Our precious Dad leaves behind- to carry on his legacy of doing right, no matter what the other fellar might be doing; Brother Robert Mathews-Stewardson, Illinois- Sons: Sam (Diane) Mathews- Otterville, Missouri, Robert Mathews- Key West, Florida, Daughter- Terry (Ken) Moffitt- Big Lake TWP, Maine- Grandchildren: Emma and Chris Nation, Mathew and Candice Fowler, Lily Bess Fowler,Marina (Chance) Mathews, Aunt Imogene Renfro, and one wily Jack Russel-Weasel.

As Mayor of Dutch Creek, Pike County Illinois- he was known to keep good company with a circle of friends that seemed like family,(but he got to pick them out himself):Tom Ellison, Carl McCleary, John Bohn, Curt & Kelly DeSpain and Family, Dave Collard and Family, Butch, Don and a few other good ones.  Special Connections: Rhiannon & Shane Klier, Ella and Addy- Like Sunshine to him. Cousins- The Bales Brothers- Ed, Jim, and Dick.  Mike and Chuck Hudspeth.   Special Buddies from way back- Brian Fowler, Mike & Chuck Hudspeth.

He was preceded in death by-

Isabel Howard- Mother, Louella Mathews- precious Sister-in-law.  Fishing Buddy-Grandson Cpl Beau G. Robbins, USMC. Uncle’s Bus and Gene. Bales’ Cousins- Pat and Jan.

A Private Family Service will be held on Bo’s Ridge. Contributions may be made to the Hometown Homecare Hospice, Cooper County Missouri…for surely the peace he knew would not have been possible without those Angels and a Nurse Practitioner who too, seemed sent by a Divine wind.

Special notes:  Carl was an avid observer of life and all it’s inhabitants, he seldom told a yard long story that he didn’t stretch a mile long.  To say we were dazzled by him is an understatement…his charm, his way with words and people has left us all with a lasting impression of a man determined to live and die (and every moment in between)- on his own terms.  We hope he knows the all and everything now, to us that knew and loved him- that is what he was…and will ever be.
