Bonnie Christian
Sabona S. “Bonnie” Christian, formerly Bonnie Arnett, passed away on March 7, 2021 in Overland Park, KS. A lifelong resident of the Sedalia area, she was born June 17, 1944 in Portsmouth, VA, where her father was stationed during his service in WWII. At the age of 6 weeks, the family returned to Sedalia where she and her younger brother were raised.
Bonnie worked at the school in Green Ridge for many years as a Teacher’s Aide. After moving back to Sedalia, she worked in the accounting department at Pittsburgh Corning while putting herself through State Fair Community College. After earning her Associates degree, she served as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Students until her retirement. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Catherine Cole, and her late husband, Gary Christian. She is survived by her son, Richard Arnett (Julie) of Columbia and their two children Brianne Taylor (Zach) & Cory Arnett, her daughter, Robin Arnett of Overland Park, KS and her son Cole Gibson, and brother Richard (Rick) Cole and his wife Patti of Ballwin, MO.
Bonnie enjoyed sewing and gardening among other things but may best be remembered by those that knew her for her cooking, especially her homemade doughnuts, chocolate sheet cake and chicken noodle soup. While her health allowed, Bonnie enjoyed helping others in many ways, but especially by serving as a mentor to students at local elementary schools, as a member of Altrusa and assisting with the Scott Joplin festival. She was also involved, along with her late husband, in the covered bridge project at Centennial Park, the Liberty Park youth fishing tournaments and numerous other community projects. In addition, Bonnie enjoyed giving support to several local charities and ensuring her local neighborhood was free of trash and dandelions by policing the median along State Fair Blvd for many years. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandkids.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Friday, March 12, 2021 at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Candace Fowler officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with a short graveside service starting at approximately 1:45 pm.
Pallbearers will be Cole Gibson, Cory Arnett, Zach Taylor and Richard Arnett.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Sedalia Animal Shelter.
