Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Nelson, 86, of La Monte, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2022 at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.

She was born March 8, 1936, in Fairfield, MO, a daughter of the late Robert and Lizzie Mae (Cobb) Breshears. She married Merle R. Nelson June 24, 1955. He preceded her in death on January 10, 2006.

Betty was a 1954 graduate of La Monte High School. While her kids were young, she was a stay-at-home mom. After they grew older, she waitressed at the Sedalia Country Club, McGrath’s, Mark Twain Restaurant and Best Western. Betty later worked in the laundry department at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.

She loved baking, reading, and gardening. Betty’s family was central to her life, and she would light up whenever they were with her.

Survivors include four children, Jeffrey Nelson (Jaynie), of St. Louis, Donald Nelson, of Sedalia, Daniel Nelson, and Jackie Wessel (David), all of La Monte; six grandchildren, Nathan Nelson, Jack Hensley, Katie Hensley, Lucas Wessel, Shelby Wessel and Lindsey Riley (Patrick); 12 great-grandchildren, Jaron, Taylen, Abigail, Katelyn, Jordan, Austin, Seth, Tucker, Jocelynn, Coralea, Charleigh and Cooper; and countless “adopted” neighborhood kids.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas J. Nelson; a granddaughter, Amanda Hensley; two brothers, Bobby Breshears and Edwin Breshears; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Nelson.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2022 at Heckart Funeral Home.

Burial will be in La Monte Cemetery.

Visitation will be 12:00 noon Friday until service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Sylvia G. Thompson Activities Fund or Crossroads Hospice in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
