Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Johnson, 92, of Sedalia, MO, formerly of Cherokee, IA, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.

She was born January 29, 1931, in Cherokee, IA, to Claude and Hazel (Nelson) Comstock. Early in life she was adopted by Benjamin and Lulu (Nelson) Spitzbarth.

On June 26, 1950, in Aurelia, IA, she was married to Mitchell M. Johnson, who preceded her in death on December 23, 1997.

Betty worked as a cook and bus driver at Cherokee School and later as a substitute cook at Sedalia 200 School District. She also worked in nursing homes.

She was a member of Parkview Christian Church. Her hobbies included reading and traveling. She loved her kids and grandkids dearly.

Surviving are three children, LaVern Johnson, of Chandler, AZ, Lowell Johnson (Vivian), of Trimble, MO, and Lori Sholly (Louis), of Sedalia, MO; eight grandchildren, Chris Johnson (Ghazal), Ben Johnson (Katie), David Johnson, James Johnson (Amanda), Scott Johnson (Mel), Greg Johnson, Andrea McIrvin, and Danelle Greer (Dean); three great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters; and several nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Lyle Johnson; and sisters, Lulu Sargent, Bertha Ney, Ann Sargent, Dorothy Wagner and Carol Jensen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Parkview Christian Church, with Rev. Jeff Randleman officiating.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, IA.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Sedalia Animal Shelter.
