In Loving Memory…

Michael S. Hughes

Michael Shane Hughes, 49, of Sedalia, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019, in Sedalia.

He was born August 11, 1969, in Fort Worth, TX, son of Jim Heffernan, and Dan and Brenda Hughes.

On August 16, 1996, in Sedalia, he married LaDonna Lynn Vansell, who preceded him in death on November 9, 1997.

Mike served in the United States Marine Corps and worked as a police officer for many years.  He loved hanging out with his daughter and spending time with his family as often as he could.  Michael enjoyed shooting guns and watching the news.  He was an MMA fighter and a bull rider (but only once in his life).  He will be remembered for being funny, loving and having a heart of gold. He was truly an honorable man.

Survivors include one daughter, Autumne Hughes (fiancé Jacob Smothers) of Sedalia, MO; three siblings, Melody Hughes of Sedalia, MO, Patricia Debo of Warrensburg, MO and Brandi Wittmaier of Warrensburg, MO; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronald and Norma Vansell of Sedalia, MO.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 11, 2019 at the Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Downing officiating.

Burial will be held in the La Monte Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps and VFW Post 2591.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the funeral home.

  15. I’m so sorry for your loss my condolences.

  16. Mike was my House Leader at Bridges of Missouri and was more than a good team member. In those days I was teaching drama out at Applewood Christian School and had a problem in that I couldn’t get off night shift in time to get there for my students’ performances in Chapel. When I told Mike about the situation his immediate response was, “What can I do to help?” Whenever I asked he would come in to work early (like 6:30 AM or so), then I’d work longer the next day. He helped me do both of my jobs better, and I knew he knew how important those kids were. Our last words to each other was a hope we’d meet again. That will probably take longer than I’d thought, but I have no doubt I shall see him in the very presence of Jesus in times to come.

  17. He was there for me when i was a troubled teen, and a friend through my adulthood. He will definitely be missed.

  18. He always greeted me with a smile, he was such a sweet heart. He even used to let me bring chicken nuggets into dukes and boots when he worked there. This is so sad to hear and he will be deeply missed! RIP Mike

  22. Oh my sweet, fun and stellar cousin. 😢 Our hearts are heavy!
I’m so grateful for the memories I have to be forever cherished with you. It was a blast being roommates in the 90’s! The Burger King Hat, Boones Farm Wine, Bandana, men buying me drinks when we went to the club and I slid them right on down to my CUZ.
Your light and excellence shall NEVER be snuffed out as a father to your beautiful daughter, a sibling, a child , an uncle, a cousin, a son- in-law, a police chief/officer/sheriff, a community leader, prankster, quick witted, funny remarks and shenanigans ….among only a few honorable mentions you are most deserving of. YOU WILL NEVER , EVER BE FORGOTTEN.
I love you, cuz!! 😘 Enjoy being with all the family who welcomed you to your forever home. I look forward to seeing you all again.

    Love,
    Jodi Justice

Autumne, you had an amazing father who loved you like no other.
Mike was a great special man who touched so many lives; be it helping straighten kids out as the juvenile officer and later as a police officer. He had tons of friends. He’d help anyone any time no matter what.
He gave me my first Law Enforcement job and that job is how I met my wife. Without Mike I would have never met my amazing wife nor had my amazing daughter. I owe a lot to him that I’ll never be able to repay.
Farewell Brother. Semper Fi Marine. You were always loved and will never be forgotten.

  35. Susan Buckler :

Mike you brought so much to my life in such a short time. Your messages, your words, sharing with me your poetry that you had written. The rough outer shell with a huge soft heat. I am thankful God put you in my life for whatever His reason. I have learned so much about you and what you stood for. I will never forget all that you taught me and brought in to my life. You are missed, will never be forgotten and you are loved. Rest easy Michael. Praying for Autumne and praying that she can find peace and comfort someday. You left an impression on so many. Much love.
