Grief Support

Moving Beyond Loss to a Richer Quality of Life

One of the least addressed concerns in our society is “grief,” the normal and natural reaction to loss. Each griever has a story to tell and a narrative that needs to be told and heard. The story is more than “just the facts.” The story is about how we interpret the facts and how we live with those facts.

Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care and Heckart Funeral Home are pleased to offer this valuable resource to the community. This grief support group is designed for grievers to be able to drop-in and share their grief experiences and gain support from the other grievers and the facilitator (Bereavement Coordinator with Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care) in a comfortable, safe and confidential space.

The monthly drop-in group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at the Heckart Family Center. We welcome you to join us for sharing and discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions:

All are able to simply show up as the facilitator Beth Hunt will be there at 4:30 p.m. Some do notify Beth first and she can be contacted at (660) 422-5804.

The drop-in style provides opportunities to assess the goals of support the griever is needing. Each participant has an opportunity to share, but it's never required. Sometimes we gain tools and insight into ourselves when we hear of others' stories.

There is never a time limit to receive support. Some attend after one week and others after one year or five. The need for support arises in different ways and for different reasons. Some choose to continue to meet at the monthly drop-in group as their goals are not to commit to an eight week program. This drop-in group is also an avenue to gain helpful coping mechanisms and for the facilitator to assist with any other necessary grief related resources. Each griever’s goals of support and need are very individual.

After attending the drop-in groups, some then choose to participate and commit to an eight week Grief Recovery Group that is designed to take the griever through a weekly classroom style learning opportunity. The Grief Recovery Institute created this Grief Recovery Method Program to help grievers learn helpful tools and to process their losses in a group setting with a goal of recovery. These groups are held at the Bothwell Education Center throughout the year. During Covid we have not been meeting at this time but do hope to be able to offer this unique support again soon. There will be precautions when we open back up that are not determined fully at this time. Masks are the known at this time.

All groups offered through Crossroads Hospice and Palliative Care are of no cost to the participant.

A touchless temperature check will be administered along with a questionnaire. Masks will be provided for participants along with ensuring the seating area will be six feet apart. This will indeed be different but necessary for the comfort of all attending.
