Heckart Funeral Home - Past to Present

About Us

In 1918, Ernest Gillespie founded the Gillespie Funeral Home. Mr. Gillespie believed that personal and professional service, quality merchandise, a modern facility and fair prices would create a desire for his services.

In June of 1948, Del and Stella Heckart along with their daughter, Sue, moved to Sedalia after purchasing the Gillespie Funeral Home.

Over the years the Heckart family has seen many changes take place in Sedalia, but they have embraced the same beliefs and traditions that Mr. Gillespie started in 1918. Many improvements have been made to the funeral home to better serve the community. Remodeling has made the facilities more comfortable and convenient. In 1975 a major building addition was completed. This included a foyer and church-like chapel with seating for over 300 people. A ground level approach to the chapel allows for an accessible entrance. A carport was also added so families can arrive at the funeral service in privacy and comfort, and have easy access during inclement weather. Ample private, off-street parking is provided on the east side of the chapel.

In January 2011, the Heckart Family Center opened its doors on the south side of the funeral home. This state-of-the-art facility houses Sedalia’s first and only crematory, as well as Sedalia’s only pet crematory, PALS Pet Loss Services. The Heckart Family center provides a large room that can be used for memorial services, family dinners after funerals, or a venue for any other life event.

It is the policy of Heckart Funeral Home and Cremation Services to serve every family honestly and well. That is our sincere and humble desire.

The professional traditions of Mr. Gillespie and Del and Stella Heckart are continued today through the efforts of Sue Heckart, Jeff Page, Jerry Page, Evan Gorrell and Jim Shoen.

We encourage you to compare prices, facilities, services, and staff. We believe that you will find Mr. Gillespie’s foundation of personal and professional service, quality merchandise, a modern facility and fair prices.
